Sicilian citrus orchard

Conca d'Oro, Palermo province, IT

Placeholder orchard entry — the Conca d'Oro (Golden Conch) is the limestone basin around Palermo where Sicilian citrus has been cultivated since Arab rule in the 9th century. Lemons run November through May; oranges and the pigmented Tarocco / Sanguinello blood oranges peak in mid-winter.

Sicily produces most of Italy’s citrus. The lemons here are big, thin-skinned, and intensely aromatic — Femminello and Interdonato varieties; the latter is the unmistakable Amalfi Coast fruit that scents lemon liqueur.
